As part of the academic cooperation between Bartın University and the University of Johannesburg under the Erasmus+ Programme, the "Erasmus+ Guest Academic Presentations" event was held on 4 June 2026.
The event took place at 10:30 a.m. in Meeting Room 130 of the Faculty of Letters and was moderated by Dr. İrem Aslan Seyhan from the Department of Philosophy at Bartın University. Within the framework of Erasmus+ staff mobility, academics visiting Bartın University from the University of Johannesburg shared their knowledge and experiences through presentations addressing a range of interdisciplinary topics.
The first speaker, Prof. Dr. Chantelle Gray from the University of Johannesburg, delivered a presentation entitled “Bernard Stiegler, Technology and the Problem of Thought.” In her talk, she examined the relationship between technology, thought, and social transformation through the philosophical perspective of Bernard Stiegler. Prof. Gray emphasized that technology should be understood not merely as an instrumental tool but as a constitutive force shaping human thought, memory, and social life.
The second speaker, Prof. Dr. Linda Maqutu from the University of Johannesburg, presented “Epistemic Decolonisation and the Integration of African Traditional Medicine: Toward Inclusive AI in Healthcare.” Her presentation explored the connections between epistemic decolonisation, the integration of African traditional medicine into healthcare systems, and the development of inclusive artificial intelligence applications. Prof. Maqutu highlighted the importance of designing healthcare technologies that are culturally sensitive, inclusive, and aligned with the principles of epistemic justice.
Made possible through the international mobility opportunities provided by the Erasmus+ Programme, the event contributed to strengthening academic collaboration between Bartın University and the University of Johannesburg while fostering interdisciplinary dialogue in the fields of philosophy, technology, healthcare, and artificial intelligence.
The programme concluded with a discussion and question-and-answer session, allowing participants to engage directly with the speakers and further explore the topics presented.
As the International Relations Office of Bartın University, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the academics from the University of Johannesburg, the Department of Philosophy, and all stakeholders who contributed to the successful organisation of this valuable academic event.
